I think as a photographer when one thinks of amazing moments they think of the time they have stopped in a photograph…
To those who know me it is no secret I have spent the last decade as a rodeo photographer. Those long nights in rodeo pens, covered in sweat and dust is where I learned to be a better photographer in terrible light situations. It is where I learned stop action capturing, panning, artistic shots vs photojournalistic and so much more….
On the weekend of June 21-23rd, my talented equestrian and trick riding performer friends dream of a weekend camp to educate the next generation of equine performers became a reality. Sixteen riders ages 5-30 made their way to Belmont, OH to learn safety, technique, new tricks, and showmanship to be a performer….
Last weekend I helped out as a photographer for the first year of my friends Pass the Torch Leadership Camp which feature trick riding clinics designed to pass his knowledge of the equestrian thrill event of trick and roman riding to the next generation.
While I am busy working on edits from the camp my contribution was working on the marketing angle so this is something he can do again year to year.
I feel there is a little model in us all. We all want to look and appear our best, to be desirable, and have the image of ourselves reflect the beauty, or masculinity within. While in my contracts and even day to day verbiage I do not refer to those I work with as a photographer as models the truth is that is how I see them during my shoots be they weddings, marketing, boudoir, or actually modeling.
Commonly in photography the men and women behind the camera niche. That is they select an area of preference and become an expert in it. It becomes the focus of their offerings and the subject they photograph the most.
Many new photographers will jump through many specialty areas trying to find the ones that they prefer and enjoy. Sometimes they inherently know and sometimes they are curious to try numerous areas and techniques to discover that perhaps what they thought they’d enjoy really wasn’t what they came to specialize in.
