So traveling is expensive gear is always changing and fraught with anxiety. I should know I just got back from a trip to Alaska where my nerves were more on going through airport security than anywhere else.
I feel there is a little model in us all. We all want to look and appear our best, to be desirable, and have the image of ourselves reflect the beauty, or masculinity within. While in my contracts and even day to day verbiage I do not refer to those I work with as a photographer as models the truth is that is how I see them during my shoots be they weddings, marketing, boudoir, or actually modeling.
Commonly in photography the men and women behind the camera niche. That is they select an area of preference and become an expert in it. It becomes the focus of their offerings and the subject they photograph the most.
Many new photographers will jump through many specialty areas trying to find the ones that they prefer and enjoy. Sometimes they inherently know and sometimes they are curious to try numerous areas and techniques to discover that perhaps what they thought they’d enjoy really wasn’t what they came to specialize in.
I photograph a lot of rodeos, and started back in 2010 with a portrait lens, a low level DSLR and not much clue on how to really shoot action in poor, poor, so poor light.
Nearly a decade later and I can see the improvement from gear to style and ability. I don’t often like to reflect back on the old because I really was terrible but my how i have grown.
As a college student a dream of mine had been to study abroad. My challenge was selecting the where, which I struggled with long and hard until Semester at Sea came on my radar. It was a semester long program on a cruise ship traveling the world!
Yep, that’s right multiple countries!
My dream come true, and in Fall of 2012 I embarked on that travel adventure, I made many friends, learned a lot about myself and photography (I was a photographers assistant on-board!)
For the longest time as a photographer I didn’t utilize the instagram platform… However in recent years, though admittedly late to the party, I have begun using the platform… The past nine months I have been sharing a lot of my rodeo content, from when I first started to the end of my last season images.
So a few weeks ago I made available a free ebook which I hope you all have grabbed!…I have been hard at work on my physical book- Moments of Rodeo is set to be made available for purchase in June of this year! (Excitement, clapping, bouncing, and much dancing!) If you follow me on instagram chances are you have seen a lot of my rodeo photography work, as I have been very active on sharing it with the instastratosphere and as much as I love the digital world nothing beats holding a print in my hand.
