Good Evening Sea was captured off the coast of Dominica in December 2012, during my time traveling with Semester at Sea. It was our final days at sea—those strange, golden hours when everything should have felt light. But that day carried something heavier.
There had been laughter, yes. The joy of closing chapters, of friendships formed across oceans. But also tears. A sudden tragedy had found its way into our floating world, and with it came grief that none of us were ready for.
That evening, the sea gave us a moment anyway.
A small boat drifted quietly across the horizon, cutting through the mirrored sunset. The light was thick with gold and rose, sky beautiful even as the sea seemed dark. I lifted my camera instinctively—not to capture beauty, but maybe to ground myself in it.
And somehow, this still frame became a place to hold the complexity of it all: beauty, sorrow, peace, ache. A farewell, in every sense.
