With Mom was awarded Honorable Mention in the 2023 Prix de la Photographie Paris (Px3) as part of my Soul of the Horse series. This soft black and white image captures a mare with her very first foal, their quiet nuzzle radiating the beauty of a new mother’s love.
Photographing horses has taught me to recognize a language beyond words — a flick of the ear, the weight of a glance, the subtle press of muzzle to muzzle. In With Mom, that language speaks of trust, tenderness, and a bond formed in the very first days of life.
Black and white renders the moment timeless, allowing the textures — the velvet of the foal’s coat, the curve of the mare’s neck — to tell the story without distraction. It’s not just about documenting an animal; it’s about honoring the connection they share.
Of all the images I’ve made of mares and foals, this one lingers the longest. It carries the quiet gravity of beginnings — a chapter of life just opened, filled with possibility.
