Some images arrive in silence—and stay forever.
A Mother’s Love was taken in the soft, early morning hours of May 2023 in Appalachian Ohio. A quiet hillside barn. A small gathering of family. And one powerful moment: a mare lowering her head gently, instinctively, toward her newborn colt—her first. A Mother’s Love was awarded Honorable Mention in the 2023 Prix de la Photographie Paris (Px3) as part of my Soul of the Horse series.
There was no rush, no noise, no need to direct anything. The moment found its own shape.
The family stood nearby—tears, laughter, reverence mixing in the stillness of that hour. It was their first foal. Their first birth as equestrians. The beginning of a story that would ripple through future rides, future bonds.
I’ve photographed horses in motion, in work, in ceremony—but this was different. This was the breath-before-anything, the moment when life was brand new and nothing else in the world mattered.
