Dogwoods Bloom was created in late spring, deep in the hills of Belmont County, Ohio, where the first dogwood blossoms opened like quiet stars against the still-bare woods. Captured in black and white, the image strips away color so the form, light, and texture can speak in their purest voice.
There is a certain patience to photographing flowers in monochrome. Without the distraction of color, every curve, every shadow, every whisper of light must be intentional. In Dogwoods Bloom, the blossoms feel both delicate and enduring, as if they’ve been standing in that same quiet moment for a hundred years.
I’ve photographed landscapes, horses, and fleeting motion, but there’s something about flowers—especially in black and white—that speaks to a slower kind of magic. It’s the reminder that beauty is not always loud or urgent. Sometimes it’s the soft unfolding of life in a place you’ve walked a hundred times without noticing.
