Glacier Bay Park Rangers

Limited Edition Fine Art Print – May 2019

In the early hours of a quiet May morning in 2019, Glacier Bay gave me a moment I’ll never forget.

It was around 3:30 or 4:00 AM as our ship slowly moved through the stillness of Glacier Bay, Alaska. The world was hushed, wrapped in soft blue and violet light. The waters were perfectly still, mirroring the towering, snow-capped mountains and low-hung mist like glass. It was the kind of beauty that feels sacred—unseen and unfelt in the rolling hills of Ohio where I live and work.

Then, just gently enough to leave a ripple, a small pilot boat carrying the Glacier Bay park rangers approached. These rangers would board our ship and guide us through the protected bay, preserving both safety and the sacredness of this natural wonder. The scene felt cinematic—solitary and still, yet filled with quiet purpose.

I was planning to shoot. In fact, I was up well before the sun reappeared—layered in four layers of warm clothes, a winter coat, gloves, and posted at the bow of the ship, determined to capture the raw beauty of Glacier Bay. May in Alaska means more daylight than darkness, and I wasn’t about to miss a moment of it.

So when the small pilot boat carrying the Glacier Bay park rangers appeared in the stillness, I was ready. The bay was motionless, the peaks silent, and the light soft and surreal. That fleeting scene—a perfect balance of nature’s grandeur and human presence—became Glacier Bay Park Rangers: a portrait of calm power, motion in restraint, and humans acting as quiet stewards of a wilder world.
