Good Morning, Dominica was captured in December 2012, during a long voyage abroad where the sea was home and the horizon always shifting. On this morning, we rose early—drawn from our cabins not by alarm, but by instinct. A kind of knowing. Land was near.
The sky was just beginning its daily transformation, soft pinks giving way to the clear blues of morning. As our ship glided toward the port in Dominica, the island began to form in shadow and light—part dream, part destination.
This photograph was taken not long after I made Island of Dominica at Sunrise, and together, the two images feel like companions: one capturing the moment of awakening, the other the slow unfurling of day. Where Island of Dominica at Sunrise holds stillness, Good Morning, Dominica carries motion—water lapping, clouds shifting, a vessel drawing closer to something known yet never quite familiar.
I didn’t know then how much this image would stay with me. Maybe it’s the blend of sea and sky. Maybe it’s the memory of standing at the ship’s rail, camera in hand, grateful and a little undone. Or maybe it’s just that some places greet you like a whispered welcome—and you never forget how that felt.
