Sometimes it’s not the motion that makes the moment—it’s the stillness.
Marked was made in July 2025 during a cattle sorting event, deep in the dust and rhythm of the arena. The day had been a steady cycle of motion: gate opens, hooves thunder, horses pivot, cattle scatter and regroup. Pen to pen, run to run. But this image was born in the quiet that came between.
The herd had bunched together, resting, wary but still. And in that moment of pause, one cow turned its head and made eye contact with me—steadily, knowingly. No panic. No motion. Just a gaze that asked:
“Will you chase me too?”
That single look cut through the blur of the day. This wasn’t just a working animal or a numbered hide. This was presence. Observation. A creature aware of being watched and choosing to meet that gaze head-on.
It’s in these in-between moments that The Working Herd Collection finds its heartbeat. These animals are part of the cultural fabric of rural life—moved by the task, but not always defined by it. In Marked, I wanted to honor not just the action of cattle work, but the consciousness of the animals themselves.
