Island of Dominica at Sunrise is a moment—captured in the stillness between night and day, as the island slowly opened to light. Taken just before dawn, this image holds a gentle, glowing quiet: the ocean still dark with sleep, the sky brushing itself awake in soft shades of rose, blue, and silver.
I work quickly, knowing the window would be short with the array of colors of the morning hour. Light moves fast when it’s new. Clouds gathered and scattered like thoughts. The shutter clicked once, twice, then I stopped. I knew I had it.
Years later, this photograph would be exhibited digitally at the Louvre—a surreal honor, yes, but one that speaks more to the power of the moment than to the image itself. Nature gave the gift. I simply received it.
