Rewarded Moments was captured just after the birth of my sister’s second colt in May 2024. It was a calm, private exchange between horse and owner—a mare gently accepting treats from my sister as a reward for bringing new life into the world. No fanfare, no commotion. Just stillness, trust, and shared understanding between the two.
I was caught up in the excitement of it all and hadn’t grabbed my low-light lenses. I also forgot to adjust my camera settings from a previous shoot. But that oversight turned into something unexpected: the result was a soft, shadowed image—bathed in backlight from a barn window—that captured something more intimate than I ever could have planned.
There’s a purity in the scene. The backlighting reveals dust in the air and soft outlines around both horse and human, giving the photo a timeless, almost dreamlike quality. It’s not just a portrait. It’s a story of partnership, resilience, and reward after labor.
