Sunrise in Glacier Bay was captured in May 2019 during a cruise through Alaska’s majestic wilderness. It was 3:30 AM, and while most passengers slept, I was bundled in four layers, perched on the ship’s bow, determined not to miss a single second of the unfolding dawn.
As we entered Glacier Bay, I watched the park ranger’s pilot carefully guide the ship through a landscape carved by ice and time. Around us, seals rested on rocky outcrops, mountain goats grazed on distant slopes, and glaciers towered like ancient monuments.
But what held me most was the sunrise itself—a rare glow for that time of year, spilling light in soft, golden waves across the still water. It was unlike any light I’d ever seen, quiet but vast, fragile yet powerful.
In the deep stillness before the world awoke, I found a new kind of beauty—wild, expansive, and utterly different from the hills of Appalachia Ohio where much of my work begins. It was a reminder that presence is the first step to truly seeing.
