The Dahlia was awarded Honorable Mention in the 2024 Prix de la Photographie Paris (Px3), a recognition that feels both humbling and affirming. It is a study in restraint and reverence — a single bloom rendered in soft, deliberate light, each petal unfolding like a whispered intention.
I have photographed many flowers over the years, but this one asked for something different. No distractions. No rush. Just quiet attention. The dahlia’s layered geometry and subtle tonal shifts drew me in, urging me to let the light shape the image rather than my own urgency.
Photographing a single subject like this can feel deceptively simple, but it demands patience. Every petal becomes a world of shadow and highlight, every curve a decision about where the eye will rest. In black and white, the absence of color makes space for form and feeling to rise to the surface.
While awards are never the reason I create, the recognition reminds me that sometimes the most understated moments speak the loudest. The Dahlia holds a stillness that invites you to slow down, breathe, and simply be present.
