Some animals don’t just stand—they command.
The Longhorn was photographed at the Belmont County Longhorn Show in July 2024. He was an adult bull—massive, composed, and unmistakably proud. He placed extremely well that day, but even before the judge’s decision, it was clear: he was built to be remembered.
Everything about him held presence. The arc of his horns. The tension in his muscles. The quiet confidence in his stance. There was no posturing, no performance—just heritage, embodied.
I’ve photographed many animals in moments of rest, reflection, or quiet beauty. But this was different. This was strength with lineage behind it. A living example of the working traditions that shape rural identity, and a visual reminder that dignity still walks among us on four hooves.
The Longhorn is part of The Working Herd, a collection dedicated to the cattle that define the rhythm of rural life. These aren’t idealized portraits—they’re grounded, honest, reverent. Celebrations of the animals who work, show, graze, and live among us with quiet power.
