Some moments remind us that innocence isn’t posed—it simply unfolds.
The Yawn captures a young foal named Percy mid-yawn, taken on a quiet May morning in 2024 in the hills of Appalachia, Ohio. There was nothing orchestrated about it—just a still moment in the pasture, soft light, and the slow rhythm of a newborn adjusting to the world.
I’d been photographing Percy for a while that morning, hoping to capture the subtle language young horses speak—the flick of an ear, the way their legs seem to belong to another animal entirely, the tender space between caution and curiosity. Then, without warning, he stretched his jaw wide in a full, unbothered yawn—utterly unaware, utterly at ease.
It was over in a breath, but the image holds the honesty of it. The unguarded nature of youth. The kind of moment you can't plan for—you just have to be present enough to receive it.
In black and white, the textures of Percy’s soft coat and delicate features become more pronounced, his expression more timeless. It’s not just a portrait of a foal—it’s a portrait of peace. Of trust. Of the world as seen by someone who’s only just arrived.
The Yawn is part of my Equine Heritage Collection, a series honoring the spirit, grace, and quiet wisdom of horses in rural America—where legacy lives not in grandeur, but in small, enduring moments.
