Why As A Photographer I have No Behind the Scenes Footage

As a photographer, I often find myself so immersed in capturing the perfect shot that I neglect to document the process itself. It's a common dilemma among photographers: while we focus on creating compelling images for our clients and portfolios, the behind-the-scenes moments often go unnoticed. Here's why that happens and why it matters.

Our primary goals photographers is to deliver high-quality photographs to our clients. The time and energy spent perfecting compositions, adjusting lighting, and ensuring every detail aligns with the vision often leave little room for capturing the process. In addition, many times we just do not have the set up or crew to capture those moments.

Another reasons behind the scenes footage falls behind is because photoshoots are time-sensitive, especially in commercial or event photography. The pressure to meet deadlines and client expectations can make it challenging to step back and take candid shots of the setup or the team in action. The urgency of the moment often takes precedence over documenting it.

As an action photographer, the action is what matters most to me. That means things like my process, me at work, and still marketing for venues doesn’t rank high unless discussed and planned for well in advance of the event.

Despite the challenges, behind-the-scenes content offers significant value. Which is why I am usually bummed I have very little BTS content. BTS content can humanizes the photographer, showcasing the effort and creativity involved in their work. Sharing our processes behind the camera can help build a stronger connection with our audience and provide insight into the artistic process.

While it is always a goal of mine every year to capture some of my process realistically unless someone is there to follow me to horse show and track my movements in dust and dirt covered arenas it is unlikely to happen. I do try to capture the editing process but even then I forget more often than I remember. I may not have an extensive collection of behind-the-scenes photos, the few I do have serve as valuable reminders of the journey behind each image.
