Storm Ride was captured in 2019, deep in the hills of Appalachian Ohio. A young rider—undeterred—was riding uphill as storm clouds built behind her. The air had shifted. The kind of quiet that only comes before a storm had settled in. And still, she rode forward.
No pose. No performance. Just instinct, grit, and a knowing only riders understand.
The image came together in seconds: the slope of the hill, the angle of the light, the horse’s tail lifted, and that vast sky cracking open behind them. It was raw. Real. Charged with both freedom and forewarning.
When I look at this image now, I see more than weather. I see heritage. The kind passed down not in words, but in seat and saddle. I see the way Appalachian families raise riders—strong, capable, bonded to their animals not through discipline alone, but through daily life, responsibility, and love.
