Sunset Over Cuba captures the exact moment where sea and sky dissolve into one another, bathed in the golden fire of a Caribbean evening. Taken in 2012 while I was living aboard the MV Explorer and traveling the world with Semester at Sea, this image is as much a memory as it is a photograph.
We were sailing just off the coast of Cuba, the light shifting minute by minute. The ocean mirrored the sky’s deepening hues, and for a brief moment, everything — ship, sea, sky — felt suspended in perfect harmony. It was the kind of beauty that makes you pause, camera in hand, and simply breathe before you press the shutter.
I have photographed countless landscapes since that voyage, but this one carries a different weight. It holds the salt-scented air, the hum of the ship, the quiet murmur of fellow travelers leaning against the rail. It holds the sense of being between places — not yet where you’re going, no longer where you’ve been.
